The founder and head of Hakurin Dojo is Sep Overlaet Sensei, 6th Dan Aikido. Born near Antwerp in Belgium in 1950, Sep has been practising Aikido for more than 50 years. In Japan, he also studied Kyudo, and he holds the title Renshi, 5th Dan. At Jiko-in in Nara, Sep studied the Sekishu style of tea ceremony.
Sep has lived and taught Aikido in Belgium, Spain, England, India, and now in Japan. He is still the head-instructor of
Byakko Dojo, the dojo he started in Aranjuez, south of Madrid, Spain.
Having moved from India to Japan in 2019, he, together with his wife, bought a very old farmhouse in Taka-cho. They restored the house using natural materials, and it is now a Kominka Guesthouse, called
Shigetsu-an. An introduction to Budo is one of the optional activities at Shigetsu-an.
